Your Tax Dollars At Work

As a special education teacher it is my duty to believe that every student is entitled to the best possible education possible. I can certainly see that a child who is blind may need extra services in learning how to cope with his or her disability. But where do we draw the line on how many services a student should have?

Next year a teacher I know will be receiving two students into her classroom. Both of the students cost the district more than $100,000 (each) for their education. This includes the teacher, teacher's aides, and other service providers such as speech and occupational therapists.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The one problem I have with science fiction movies is that they often are trying to present a philosophical view of the world. In T3 it was predestination, Xmen pushed the religion of evolution, and The Matrix movies had too many to count. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is no exception.

The Guide pushes the world view of nihilism. Quickly put, this view believes that god does not exist, we have no purpose in life, and therefore nothing has meaning. Life thus is a cosmic joke, and we are on the receiving end.

No such thing as a free lunch...

There is no such thing as a free lunch. However, many of the students I teach think there is. For example, out of the 18 students my wife teaches, 16 of her students get "free lunches" from the cafeteria because their parents do not make a significant amount of money. Did I mention that many of the schools also provide free breakfast as well? I may have also forgotten that nutrition is also highly subsidized.

We are creating a class of people that from the age of five are learning to depend on the government for their most basic of needs-food. This whole situation would not bother me as much if I did not see the students eat and the tremendous amount of waste that is produced. Many of the students eat just the dessert and literally throw away the portions of the meal that they do not want. Tax dollars at work.

Sexism at Church

I was going to church (I go to two different ones on different nights)and the preschool room was short of teachers. I have had some experience with kids. After all I teach them in the public schools. My job this morning was a pre-K group of kids. I help out a few times a month at my child's pre-school as well.

So, I volunteered to help out. Everything was going as I expected. Some mothers looked at me in an odd manner when dropping their kids off. No problems there. I understand far more about sex offenders than most of these parents realize.

But then the kicker came. My daughter had the stinky diaper. I got her up to change her and the other "teacher" told me I couldn't change her diaper. This seemed odd to me as I was sure that she knew I was her father. After all, I drop off and pick up my daughter each week, and this teacher has no problems giving me my child back at the end of service. She informed me that no men could change diapers, even diapers of their own children. Hmm, if I was a molester of my own children, wouldn't I do that at home?

Just the Facts, Ma'am!

You have to love the election commercials. Kerry says X number of jobs have been lost. Bush says X number of jobs have been created. And half the time neither candidate says where they got their numbers from. As Twain would say, "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics."

Well, some of us would like more infomation on how these numbers are actually created. One can look to the University of PA for their site FactCheck.org. They do the CSI on advertisements from both camps. Take a peek, you might find some surprising things.
