Hi...I joined shadyvale mainly because I wanted to contact you about your time in Moldova. I'm a social worker and work with those who have been liberated from human trafficking. I live in Portland Or, but also lived in Calcutta India for many months last year working with this same population. Now, i'm interested in Moldova and am wondering what you know about the topic of human trafficking in Moldova. I know it's a huge problem, but any other info you can give me would be great. Thanks...my email is: afolkertsma@theotherjournal.com

Welcome April. I read an article (can't find it at the moment) about human trafficking of young women to Turkey from Moldova. But in my three visits to the country, most of the time being spent in small villages, I have never heard of direct accounts of such activity. I do know that one out of every three males is out of the country to find work, and that many are being lured into various means of making money to survive. Being one of the poorest of the former soviet republics, it is very susceptable to much corruption and evil schemes. Based on the article, I referenced the problem in a message I gave to the small village of Rascaieti, referencing girls being taken out of the country because they were offered jobs under false pretenses. I remember seeing some acknowledgement on the faces of those who may have heard of such situations, but I did not really discuss it with anyone. Sadly, a search of google with the terms "moldova human trafficking " results in many articles.
The only positive thing is that the gospel of Jesus Christ is being shared by the local churches and missionaries, as well as through joint partnerships with churches and organizations in the United States. My Moldovan translator Roman Melancea, who became dear friend, is reaching out to youth ages 13-21 through summer camps. These camps offer english lessons, and have drawn many unbelieving teens who would perhaps face some difficult situations such as these in the future. The formal project is just getting off the ground, and its called "The Phoenix Project ". Roman and his wife, just visited California and Maine last week to raise support.
Let me know if there is anything else I can provide information on. Its possible that I could provide contacts of some who would know more.
