Geolocation (GPS) Data via Jabber

Now that Peter St. Andre has wrapped up most of his activities with the IETF XMPP working group, he has had some time to clean up some of the proposed protocol enhabcements to Jabber. See his blog entry, JEP City.

The collest one that I hadn't noticed before, is Jep-0080 User Geolocation.

This JEP defines a format for capturing data about an entity's geographical location (geoloc). The namespace defined herein is intended to provide a semi-structured format for describing a geographical location that may change fairly frequently, where the geoloc information is provided as Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates. Potential uses for this approach include:

  • Publishing geoloc information to a set of subscribers.
  • Querying another entity for its geoloc.
  • Sending geoloc information to another entity.
  • Attaching geoloc information to presence.

For other interesting Jabber Enhancement Protocols, see the JEP List.

Interesting Stuff

Yeah, this is pretty interesting stuff. I remember reading about groups at Stanford who were messing around with geolocation information for interactive computing (including instant messaging). For example, you could find out what food services where close to you, how far away people chatting with you are, stuff like that. I think it would be cool for some people to know where I'm at, but I would want to be able to give out that information selectively.

Jabber World Map

Oh, you mean you don't go for being listed on this Jabber World Map?

BTW, make sure to click/zoom in to crowded areas in the Netherlands, they have it down to the street level. I thought there was at least one building as well before.
